  17. <p>    When animator RALPH BAKSHI debuted in 1972 with the
  18. X-rated escapade Fritz the Cat, his was a raw-edged voice in a
  19. wilderness of cloying cartoon cutesiness. Maybe too raw. His
  20. uneasy relationship with Hollywood ended many films later with
  21. 1981's American Pop -- or seemed to. "Now suddenly they all want
  22. animated films," Bakshi laughs, "and they figured out I was
  23. alive." The result is this summer's Cool World, Bakshi's live
  24. action/animated feature about a cartoon temptress who becomes
  25. "real" by seducing her creator, GABRIEL BYRNE. KIM BASINGER
  26. stars as the inkwell refugee, appearing both in cartoon guise
  27. and in the flesh. Bakshi's renewed respectability is summed up
  28. in Cool World's budget. His most expensive previous film cost
  29. $4 million. Cool World's bills totaled $28 million.
